Another trailer for Free Guy dropped last night. While we got a sense of the storyline from the last trailer (Ryan Reynolds' Guy discovers he's an NPC in a video game), this second one gives us more to work with.
This time we know that Jodie Comer's character is actually a programmer playing a video game character in the world of Free City. And we know that Guy breaks out of his programming and is acting on his own accord. This displeases Antoine (played by Taika Waititi), probably the publisher of Free City, and he wants to pull the plug on the game. It is up to Guy to rise up and be the hero that he's always meant to be.
On the surface, it looks like a fun adventure about a man rising above his station to find his true calling but it's just another timeless tale of free will versus determinism. But what's more pressing is the movie's release date. After the COVID-19 pandemic scuttled its original release date of 3 July, Free Guy is expected to hit theatres on11 December. Well, fingers crossed.
