If it ain't broken, don't fix it. ASICS and the queen of punk, Vivienne Westwood, come together for the second time. For this round, it's the release of a limited-edition collection across three ASICSTIGER shoe models.
With an emphasis on historical references to art and fashion, this collab takes inspiration from the paintings of 18th-century French artist François Boucher (who was first referenced in Westwood’s AW1990 collection ‘Portrait’).
Three sneakers—the HyperGEL-LYTE, GELSAGA, and GEL-DS TRAINER OG—become canvases for Boucher's romantic rococo work, Daphnis and Chloe. The love story of the shepherd and shepherdess drapes the HyperGEL-LYTE, with an overall celadon hue that pays homage to the colours found in 18th-century oil paintings. The pewter shoelaces, orange tigerstripes, delicate embellishment of the shoe buckle and Westwood's iconic Sovereign Orb logo on the shoe heel gives a modernist edge to this shoe.
Meant to be contrasted to the HyperGEL-LYTE, the GELSAGA is constructed in white leather with the Daphnis and Chloe painting printed on the translucent sole of the trainer. Again, Westwood's Sovereign Orb logo is found on the heels.
And finally, the colourway of the GEL-DS TRAINER OG is based on Westwood's Sovereign Orb's colour palette: mesh materials in primary hues, laid against black synthetic suede; reflective 3M ASICS stripes are added to the make. Once more, Daphnis and Chloe is used in the construction, but this time it's printed on the sneaker's innersole.
The ASICS x Vivienne Westwood collection will be released tomorrow, 17 August and retail at SGD249 (HyperGEL-LYTE); SGD229 (GEL-DS TRAINER OG) and SGD219 (GELSAGA). The collection is available at Vivienne Westwood Anglomania at Scotts Square and Isetan Scotts; Limited Edt Vault at 313@Somerset and Marina Bay Sands; Tyan Boutique as well as online.
