The gourmet burger scene in Singapore has evidently been on a roll lately. Said evidence: 1) the opening of New York burger chain Black Tap, 2) the launch of Impossible Burger 2.0 and 3) Shake Shack's arrival at Jewel Changi Airport (yeah, we're still not over this). Of course, being the trendy, up-to-date millennial with a serious case of #FOMO, we've already covered all the above-mentioned places and more.
We now focus on the local independent burger joints… because, seriously, the quest to find the best burger never ends.
Highly raved as one of the best burgers in town, do yourself a huge favour and head down to Omakase Burger ASAP if you've never had a bite of their five-star burg. Every component of their burgers is carefully hand-picked and sourced by the founder, Cheng Hsin Yao, from the pillowy soft potato rolls imported from Martin's Sandwich right down to the American cheese. Less is truly more with the classic Omakase Cheeseburger—a proprietary blend of beef smashed into a patty, a (highly addictive) special sauce and gooey cheese—each component done so incredibly well one can only wish the burger was larger. Like, maybe, 3x larger, 'cause we don't want it to end.
Recommendation from the kitchen: "Burgers always held a special place in my heart. I know it sounds cheesy, but that's the truth." Cheng revealed. He wanted to recreate and spread the joy he felt the first time he sunk his teeth into a homemade burger. For Cheng, the off-menu Double Cheeseburger is hands down his favourite. Not only does it brings back fond memories of his mother's homemade burger, but he is also a huge fan of the greater meat-to-bun ratio that imparts a stronger, more aromatic beefy flavour.
Omakase Burger is located at 435 Orchard Road, #03-15, Picnic Food Park, Wisma Atria, Singapore 238877. For reservation, call 6734 8352
Fatboy's The Burger Bar
Fatboy’s The Burger Bar dishes out over-the-top and incredibly indulgent burgers that induces comfort (and perhaps diabetes but seriously, treat yourself). The Elvis is a twist on Elvis Presley’s (duh) favourite sarnie, with bacon-stuffed pork patty, caramelised banana and creamy peanut butter layered between toasted honey oat buns. Dinner and dessert in one meal. #Win.
Recommendation from the kitchen: the Fat Basterd, the founders' all-time favourite burger that started it all—double beef chuck patties, streaky bacon, aged cheddar cheese, a sunny side up and Fatboy's homemade BBQ sauce between sesame brioche buns.
Fatboy’s The Burger Bar is located at 187 Upper Thomson Road, Singapore 574335. For reservation, call 6252 8780.
Helmed by an unexpected crew—a self-taught cook, a musician, a private banker and a private equity professional, Wolf Burgers amassed a loyal following for putting together premium burgers at wallet-friendly prices. Original Wolf is their signature no-frills burger, comprising a juicy beef patty seared to a golden brown and cheddar cheese sandwiched between buttery brioche buns.
Feeling fancy? Truffled Mushroom Beef comes with a truffle-infused beef patty and a layer of sautéed mushrooms for an extra hit of umami.
Recommendation from the kitchen: Wagyu Beef Burger paired with a side Fortune "Fries" (these aren't your run-off-the-mill fried potato strips, these "fries" are made from deep-fried sliced mantou, slathered in a housemade sweet and sour sauce, diced pineapple, chilli flakes and pork floss)
Wolf Burgers is located at 3 Temasek Boulevard, #01-455, Suntec City North Wing, Pasarbella, Singapore 038983.
A stone's throw away from the CBD, Burger Buddies is tucked within the neighbourhood of the Pinnacle estate. The hearty portions give you more bang for your buck, with nothing more than SGD15. Rendang Beef is inspired by the classic Indonesian dry beef curry, with a hefty 180g beef patty topped with shredded rendang beef, cucumber slices and diced onion. Top up a dollar for a perfectly cooked sunny side up while you’re at it, because who can resist some #yolkporn action amirite?
Recommendation from the kitchen: Burger Buddies' signature Mushroom Beef Burger (I mean, just look at that velvety blanket of creamy 'shrooms) with a side of fries because… fries.
Burger Buddies is located at 1 Cantonment Road, #01-01, The Pinnacle @ Duxton, Singapore 080001. For reservation, call 6727 6066.
With groovy neon signs, retro linoleum tiles, booth seats and hues of bubblegum pink, OverEasy exudes a strong Riverdale-esque vibe. Dishing up quintessential classic American grub, we seriously can’t help but think of Pop’s Chock’Lit Shoppe. The Hangover Part IV is cleverly served with English muffins instead of burger buns, stuffed with everything breakfast and more—sunny side up, streaky bacon, ham, red cheddar, rösti and their signature wagyu chuck blend patty and a side of crispy shoestring fries.
Recommendation from the kitchen: The Truffle Burger—signature wagyu-chuck patty paired with savoury truffle mayo cuts through the sweetness from the caramelised onions and mushrooms, creating a perfect savoury-sweet blend. If you have extra stomach capacity, Lobster Tater Tots is one of the team's favourite side dish, with fresh lobster shredded on top of crispy grated potatoes, finished with creamy aioli.
OverEasy is located at 541 Orchard Road, #01-01, Liat Towers, Singapore 238881. For reservation, call 6684 1453.
The first (and definitely not the last) plant-based burger joint to open its doors in Singapore, VeganBurg recently hopped onto the Impossible Foods bandwagon. Diners now have the option to substitute regular patties for an Impossible Patty for an additional SGD5. Get high on crack with Cracked Mayo which gives you a crispy soy patty smushed between fresh vegetables and creamy vegan mayonnaise which, FYI, tastes like the real damn deal. #Shookt.
Recommendation from the kitchen: Chilli Krab burger paired with Loaded Shrooms Fries. The VeganBurg team is a huge fan of its lightly-spiced patty and the tangy-and-spicy (tang-cy?) rempah sauce that is reminiscent of our local chilli crab dish.
VeganBurg is located at 44 Jalan Eunos, Singapore 419502. For reservation, call 6844 6868.
Down for an adventure? Give Shiok Shack a follow on their Instagram. This burger pop-up moves around Singapore and settles down just for one night to dish out their bangin’ burgers. We say think no further and go with the Shiok Classic—perfectly seared beef patty slathered in a special in-house shiok sauce, topped with fresh veggies and toasted buns to hold all that juicy goodness in. Turn on the notifications on their Instagram page for feed posts and stories to keep up with their next location!
