Known as lovers and friends, not many are privy to the relationship between Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe. DESIRE is a photo book by Lloyd Ziff, who attempts to plumb the depths of the couple's intimacy. Choosing to focus on Smith and Mapplethorpe's photoshoot together—one in Smith and Mapplethorpe's Hall Street space in 1968 and the other in 1969 at Ziff's apartment on Charles Street.
The photos showcase the spontaneity of youth and the mysteries of affection; the emotional complexities emanating from the black-and-white stills. Throughout the pages, the music and art iconographies of Smith and Mapplethorpe is replaced with something more grounded, more real as we're privy to moments in the couple's life that can never be replicated.
Consisting of over 65 works that are unpublished, the photo book includes street photography, along with contact sheets and personal notes. The book is bound in a natural white, hard-back cover and comes wrapped in brown parcel paper and sewn in a paper bag.
