Always ahead of the curve, always first into the next big thing, DJ-producer Steve Aoki recently unveiled his second NFT drop. Neon Future is a sci-fi comic-themed NFT set created in partnership with Tom Bilyeu (of Impact Theory fame) where Aoki came up with new original music tracks to go with special animation designed by digital artist Maciej Kuciara. Believing in the great potential of NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, Aoki has told various news sources during the launch that he predicts there will come a time when everyone will carry around a digital wallet stored with valuables and experiences in NFT format.
“Right now, we’re in a new renaissance. We’re so excited about this huge world that’s going to open up and be everywhere,” Aoki said in an interview with CNBC. “Anyone can make it. You don’t need a big company to do it. You can do whatever you want with it.”
As an avid art collector and known techno-optimist, Aoki certainly believes that the future of NFTs is bright—indeed, it is as bright as the watch on his wrist designed especially for him by Italian luxury maker, Bulgari.
Sharing in Aoki’s natural inclination for conviviality, warmth, colours, and joie de vivre, Bulgari sought to create a watch as iconic and festive as Aoki’s oeuvre—be it in fashion, design, art, or music.
Drawing inspiration from how the EDM musician brightens up the world with his rhythms, and taking visual cues from rave parties and club culture (it’s all black meets neon, basically) Bulgari gave its emblematic Aluminium timepiece a remix, so to speak.
The Bulgari Aluminium Steve Aoki special edition has Aoki’s signature fang logo emblazoned across the dial. By day it’s a discreet nod to the musician’s identity. But by night, the entire dial lights up, save the logo and the watch’s hands and hours markers, revealing a completely new aesthetic altogether. Now it is a true EDM DJ’s watch.
Bringing light where there’s darkness, this timepiece delivers the subliminal messages of Aoki’s music and his personal causes accomplished via the Aoki Foundation. The watch is also ultra-light, as it is made in aluminium, with a DLC titanium back engraved with Aoki’s famous signature.
He says, “Bulgari is a company that stands for tradition, for craftsmanship, for quality. These core principles are sacred to me and guide how I both aspire to live and create.”
We could definitely see the Bulgari Aluminium Steve Aoki special edition pairing well with the musician’s own Dim Mak collections. After all, he did help design this timepiece that bears his name.
“Time is one of our most valuable currencies and that is why together we mindfully and meticulously designed a beautiful timepiece that upholds the strong standards of quality and craftsmanship that both Bulgari and I stand for,” he says.
Powered by a mechanical self-winding movement, this 40mm watch (priced at S$4,260) comes with a black rubber bracelet joined by aluminium links. Its 42-hour power reserve is perfectly equipped to last from dusk to dawn. So you could say this might be the ultimate nightlifer’s watch. Well, Aoki definitely thinks so.
“I’m beaming with pride and excitement to share this new timepiece with the world and cannot wait to share what else we have coming together.”
