Esquire Singapore doesn’t break the rules, it makes its own. Not only did we spearhead AI-collaborated publishing, we’ve reinvented the D&D. Our first Dinner and Debate (think Esquire Talks, plus more to chew on—literally and figuratively) dug deep into the making of the issue.
More importantly, we launched our shiny, new, digital Big Black Book. Basically, a style bible at your fingertips. There’s games, playlists, style guides, so thumb through and have fun. Did we mention it’s a first for Esquire worldwide? Again, trailblazer.
Now, where better to host the event than at the world's first tech-enabled dining playground habitat by honestbee? QR-code entry is one thing, Esquire Singapore’s D&D was held in the exclusive dining area behind b bar, the concept’s latest secret hideout. Talk about private.
Nothing was held back as we discussed everything from AI-generated fake news to the factor of empathy in job-replacement. Before you start feeling left out, here’s what went down.
Gary Jackson | Executive Director, QLX
On creating AI Squire
“When I [started working on] the editor’s letter, I kicked it off, went to get coffee, and by the time I came back and it had written this story about Santa Claus, talking about how he isn't real but humans believe in him and do not pass laws to prevent him from being real. So why are you trying to prevent me, the AI, from being real? That's when I'm like wow, we did something truly different.”
Norman Tan | Editor-in-Chief, Esquire Singapore
On whether AI can replace human writers
“The real litmus test is whether it can be funny. It obviously needs perspective and a point of view, but wit is a big part of how we write at Esquire. Being funny is tough because it's so nuanced, you have to read your audience, understand your pop culture references, but it potentially could work. Even as it is now, for pushing out 300-word online content that’s news piece driven. Given that AI Squire is technically 3 months old, who knows what you can get in a year?”
Janosch Amstutz | CEO and founder of AR platform HoloMe
On the growth of augmented reality
"AR primarily has had major barriers for deployment. Usually to create an AR experience you need to custom build certain applications, expensive equipment to capture content, and consumers haven't had a way to view AR in an accessible way. What has changed—and this is largely thanks to Apple as well—is you now have a phone in your pocket which allows you to view any AR experiences in high quality, high definition and that’s now. There’s over a billion phones in the world that are able to and that’s very powerful."
