When it comes to the world of street art, New York-based artist, Futura aka Leonard McGurr, is considered the point man of the scene. Now, the godfather of graffiti debuts his first solo show in South East Asia that will showcase 30 original pieces that were produced on-site in Singapore during a secret residency last year.
Presented by The Culture Story and curated by artist Jahan Loh, the exhibition is called CONSTELLATION. So, named after the USS 'Constellation' that the younger Futura was on when he was with the Merchant Marines as it passed through Singapore harbours.
With an opening party at Block 9 at Gillman Barracks, the public can witness Futura's work and as well as the artist himself. There will also be live DJ sets by Alex Turnbull, percussionist for 23 Skidoo; DJ Ashidiq Ghazali and DJ Kiat, co-founder of Syndicate.
There will also be a limited-edition 150-page exhibition catalogue that's housed in a custom-designed military ammo box and a heavyweight commemorative canvas portage; the Collector's Box Set will be signed by Futura.
Fans can also expect other programmes involving the artist like the relaunch of Futura Laboratories at Dover Street Market Singapore on May 31. There will be a specially commissioned painting by Futura in-store from May 31 to June 9, as well as a 30-minute meet-and-greet sesh with him on June 2 at 5.30pm at DSMS. Over at the Projector, there's an exclusive one-night-only premiere screening of a 20-minute mini-documentary about the artist and interviews with his contemporaries that include STASH and CRASH on Saturday 1 June.
Presented by The Culture Story, Futura’s solo-exhibition CONSTELLATION will run from 30 May to 9 June 2019 at Gillman Barracks, Lock Road, Block 9 #02-21.
