The Casio G-Shock needs no introduction but the latest iteration of this everyday favourite definitely deserves a warm welcome. Fresh out of the BaselWorld watch and jewellery fair, the GMW-B5000D-1 is the first watch in Casio’s 5000 series to be made in stainless steel. And this gorgeous, almost luxurious model looks even better on the wrist.
Everything has been made in stainless steel, from the bracelet to the case to the bezel, with a combination of polished and brushed surfaces. Yet it wouldn’t be a G-Shock if it didn’t retain its tough-as-nails shock resistance. Casio here presented a new case construction where a fine resin insert was placed between the case and the bezel in order to absorb any impact.
GMW-B5000D1 is based on the original 1983 model, DW-5000, which is literally the world’s very first G-Shock. This was the inaugural model that formulated the design identity and DNA of all subsequent models including the hugely popular DW-5600 of 1987.
The watch’s Connected Engine module is a godsend to frequent travellers because it connects to the local time server via a paired smartphone. Additionally, it connects to radio wave time-calibration signals independently—meaning it automatically accounts for daylight savings time. Using the G-Shock Connected smartphone app, you can easily adjust settings such as world time display and set the alarm.
Now for even more exciting news, Casio has come up with a second variation, a special edition to mark the 35th anniversary of the G-Shock. GMW-B5000TFG-9 is just like the GMW-B5000D-1 except—and it is a pretty big ‘except’—it is clad fully in gold. Well, not gold gold, but gold ion-plated steel. Nonetheless, this super-blinged out G-Shock is a collector’s piece that’s made in limited quantities but Casio has not disclosed the production numbers.
And if you must know, Casio did in fact create a solid yellow gold G-Shock and exhibited it at BaselWorld. That piece, however, is a concept watch and thus not for sale.
Its mirror polished case and bracelet might draw fingerprints but that’s small beer if you consider the phenomenal street cred you’ll earn.
The GMW-B5000D-1 and GMW-B5000TFG-9 will retail in Singapore at S$799 and S$949 respectively and are available from 26th April at all G-Factory outlets island-wide (excluding IMM).
