The recently concluded 2019 American Music Awards proved one thing: that music and fashion of the '90s are still relevant and beloved. The three-hour long award show opened with a performance by Selena Gomez, who hasn't performed live for two years, and was packed with performances by today's hitmakers.
Yet, two highlights of the night were by Toni Braxton and Shania Twain—music legends who were peak '90s icons. Braxton took the stage with a stirring performance of her most well-known song 'Unbreak My Heart', while the latter performed a medley of her country-pop hits as she readies a Las Vegas residency. And both siginified (just look at Post Malone singing along to Twain) their iconic footprints in music history.

On the red carpet, it was interpretations of '90s fashion that reigned—a loose assemblage of outfits that bordered on tacky but restrained, so much so that they were still elegant. Diplo is still sticking to his stereotypically country music look (he's about to release a country-esque EP) but this time, embracing the MCM monogram as part of a suede-and-leather suit. Lil Nas X looked like a highlighter but also reminded us of a modern MC Hammer sans the baggy, drop-crotch trousers. And folks such as Ben Platt, Patrick Schwarzenegger and Shawn Mendes fronted colour-blocking looks in varying intensities.
Ah, the '90s, always relevant.
