The annual MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) has become a celebration of modern music and youth culture. You'd find a performance or two in honour of a music legend, but generally, the award show has a track record of showcasing the most-heard mainstream music hits by contemporary artists. Incessantly catchy music that you can't seem to get out of your head and begrudgingly know most of the lyrics too.
But things are slightly different this year. The 2019 MTV VMAs has partnered with the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and created the inaugural 'MTV Fashion Trailblazer Award', to honour fashion designers who've made significant impact within the world of music. The first fashion-centric 'Moon Person' was awarded to Marc Jacobs (who completed his olive green suit with red ruby heels by Prada) during the show.
It's a fitting inclusion, seeing how fashion and music has always influenced one another. And it's hard to imagine an artist without an iconic fashion look coming to mind—the late Prince with his purple suit and ruffled shirt, Lady Gaga and her various head-turning looks, and Post Malone's penchant for prints and embellishments.
And if there's ever any doubt to fashion's relationship with music, you'd only need to look at this year's MTV VMAs red carpet. There are elements of fun, moments of shock, and doses of high fashion.
