In a certain part of the world, the season of love extends past February and into the month of May. That certain part is China, where their second Valentine's Day rings in every 20 May, a homophone for "I love you" in Mandarin.
Expressed in indigo ink blooms, highlighter yellow tracksuits and encased in the hopeful and pristine blues of the sky, Alexander McQueen's 520 capsule collection calls upon five artsy individuals to show how they love their partners, art and themselves freely and fiercely. Fronting the energy-filled campaign is singer Qing Lian, musicians Loco & Chuyi, dancer Li Meijing and skateboarder Jinzi, who all move with zest in a specially commissioned film and sequence of stills to Spring Summer 2022's theme of ‘Storm Chasing'. Voluminous yet casual silhouettes are abound, while bold silver ear candy and "rave" boots bring to mind McQueen's own love of the punk.
“Storm chasing is not only about the beauty of the views but also a sense of mystery and excitement – about embracing the fact that we can’t ever be sure of what might happen next,” said Sarah Burton, Creative Director of Alexander McQueen. “To give up control and be directly in touch with the unpredictable is to be part of nature, to see and feel it at its most intense – to be at one with a world that is bigger and more powerful than we are.”
This state of mind seems rather timely to take on as the world slowly welcomes the break of a post-pandemic dawn. Till parties of all sorts are back in order, here's Alexander McQueen taking this special day to tease hungry lovers of the wild and riveting romance arcs we can now, once again, star in.
