There is a new king at the house of Berluti and he has his sights set on expanding their mastery of leather and craftsmanship into new realms. We are talking about Kris Van Assche and his recent appointment at Berluti. While we are still a couple of months away from the drop of his first runway collection with the French maison, the designer has not been resting on his laurels.
This April, Van Assche will be releasing Berluti's first beachwear capsule collection. The pairing of leather and the pristine sandy beaches is not one that makes sense immediately, but it was a challenge that Van Assche relished, to reinterpret and innovate the saviour-fair of Berluti. Case in point, their signature hand-painted patinated Venezia leather was given an innovative colour edge dying treatment and, channelling Berluti’s history of crafting surprising and collectable objects, there’s also a beach racket set, deck chairs, pool rings and pétanque game set.
But the truly luxurious part of this beachwear capsule collection is the amount of care and consideration that went into creating each piece. Take, for example, the polo-tee. Made of a cotton pique that has been mercerized—a treatment to give the fabric a silky and lustrous effect—it is completed with mother-of-pearl buttons with neon edges.
The capsule also introduces a new footwear silhouttle—the Egio Sandals; a double strap sandal that melds the beautiful patina of leather with a supple rubber sole. It looks great without sacrificing on durability and comfort.
Berluti's beach capsule collection will be available at their Ngee Ann City outlet from 7 April.
