Marvel's latest entrant into the fourth phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is set to be monumental for a few reasons. Firstly, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will be the first film centred around an Asian character, complete with a largely Asian cast. It's also an attempt at redoing some of Marvel Comics's past of rather unfortunate and narrow view of Asian culture.
Narrative-wise, it's an extended exploration of the MCU's more magical and mystical aspects, as previously introduced in Doctor Strange and then WandaVision. And for those of us who relish being in theatres for the full cinematic effect, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will be the first Marvel movie to be released in theatres first instead of the Disney+ joint release that's been happening since the pandemic.
That also meant that there was actually a physical red carpet world premiere for the film. And the film's stars as well as guests spared no expense when it came to style.
Lead actor Simu Liu paid homage to the importance of his role as well as Asian culture with a signature waist-tie Dzojchen suit, topped off with a gold medallion chain around his neck. Ronny Chieng adopted a more classic menswear approach—a look that he does exceptionally well—with a white tuxedo jacket accentuated with just a pop of red. And to underscore the point of how Thom Browne for boys is sartorial genius, actor Jayden Zhang (he plays a young Shang-Chi) showed up in a perfectly coordinated pinstripe number by the American brand.
