When it comes to Doublet, you can always expect a fun and subversive twist to their garments; after all, one doesn't simply win the LVMH Grand Prize for being a run-of-the-mill label. The rising Japanese label that was launched in 2012 by designer Masayuki Ino is a master alchemist, melding innovative fabrics, clever slogan and graphics and juxtaposing silhouettes, all done with a sense of joy and humour.
But what truly sets Doublet apart from the rest of the pack is the experience that comes from owning a piece from their collection. Yes, it is important for clothing to make us look and feel good, but Ino takes clothing to a rarified plane with his packaging. Think T-shirts that come in an instant noodle cup, and shirts in the form of a hanger—both require the addition of water before revealing their true form. Not to mention a flattened piece of plastic-covered fabric that comes with an instructional manual on how to transform it into a shirt.
For Doublet's fall/winter 2019 collection, Ino will be launching a T-shirt capsule collection with four other designers: Botter, Dreamland Syndicate, Landlord as well as Singapore's very own Salvages. Working on the theme of ‘SURPRISE!’, the collection will be presented in the form of a toy capsules vending machine, or more commonly known in Japan as Gashapon.
The T-shirts will run in only one size and comes in five designs, four from the collaborators and one that is Doublet's own. The collection is more than just a novel way to dispense the T-shirts; there is no way to pick and choose the design that you want. Instead of purchasing a T-shirt, you purchase a token that you can use on the Gashapon.
When asked about the concept behind the Gashapon collection, Ino shared that it stems from his fascination with the toy vending machine that seeming splits out random capsules. When asked to elaborate, Ino says, "as you know we cannot choose what we want by toy capsule machine. If I am lucky I can get what I want, sometimes we get the same one. Nevertheless, it was a memorable moment."
