When it comes to collaboration, the natural tendency is to go loud. After all, collaborations are as much a partnership between two creative forces as it is a massive marketing boon for both sides. But an outlier in this collaboration formula is the capsule collection between Uniqlo and Engineered Garments for the autumn/winter 2019 season—arguably, one of the most underrated collaborations thus far.
The duo reunited after their inaugural collection that rolled out earlier this year in May. This time, Engineered Garments' creative director, Daiki Suzuki, has applied a military aesthetic to fleece with pieces like collarless coats, jackets and pullovers in autumnal hues of brown, olive green, navy and grey.
But why is the collaboration is underrated? Design-wise, the pieces are under-the-radar when it comes to attention-grabbing statement pieces. However, what it lacks in flash, it makes up for in substance, functionality and attention to details. Case in point: the jacket is made up of a patchwork of fleece in varying textures and is surprisingly lightweight, while the pullovers are equipped with functional pocket details. And, a simple fleece pullover packs as much warmth as a traditional coat.
Fleece in Singapore? For sure, this might be overkill for our climate, but it's perfect for traveling to somewhere colder during the upcoming holiday season.
