One can hardly make any solid predictions anymore for 2020; not even for at least till after the first half of next year. But no one could have predicted this: the coming together of three very distinct musicians for a Gucci tailoring campaign. Rappers A$AP Rocky and Tyler, the Creator hanging out in a West Coast mansion with the godfather of punk, Iggy Pop? A strange mix but one we can now envision happening in real life.
While their musical styles vary (then again, it's difficult to box Iggy Pop to just one genre), their similarities lie in their cultural footprints beyond music. A$AP Rocky's fashion-forward style has afforded him connections to some of the biggest fashion houses—he was the face of Dior Homme back in 2016, collaborated with JW Anderson in the same year, and partnered up with Calvin Klein during the Raf Simons era. Tyler, the Creator developed his own fashion brand, Golf Wang, in 2011 and then shoe brand Golf le Fleur in 2016, with the latter having been part of collaborations with Lacoste and Converse.
Iggy Pop may not have a fashion brand attached to his name, but the legend is a style and cultural icon in his own right. Almost always performing bare-chested, Pop is anything but conservative when it comes to his fashion choices. We've seen him in skirts, kilts, dresses and everything else that defies any sort of conventional gender lines, making him the perfect embodiment of Alessandro Michele's Gucci.
For Gucci's latest tailoring campaign—aptly named Life of a Rockstar—the trio meet in Los Angeles, in a stunning private mansion. We get introduced to Pop's pet cockatoo, Biggy Pop, and its blue hyacinth macaw friend (how undeniably rockstar), and the quintet spend the day hanging out in Gucci's more sartorial pieces of the season. Yet, in true Gucci form, they're hardly ever staid. It's monogram-galore, luxurious fabrications, and rich colours that are complementary to the exuberance and joy of the campaign.
