The late Karl Lagerfeld still is arguably one of the most iconic figures in fashion. It was not only in his ability to split his time and creative inputs between Chanel, Fendi, and his eponymous fashion label, but he also had an undeniable presence—underscored by his characteristic ponytail and high-collared white shirts.
Karl Lagerfeld the brand is now under the creative direction of its design director Hun Kim, with French fashion editor Carine Roitfeld serving as its style advisor. In the spirit of the founder's love for collaborations (Lagerfeld was the first to collaborate with H&M that led to almost annual collaborations by the latter soon after), Roitfeld has proposed and curated a collaboration with Lagos-based fashion designer Kenneth Ize.
Ize co-created the Karl Lagerfeld x Kenneth Ize capsule collection with Kim, taking eye-catching West African-inspired motifs and prints and fusing them with a sense of European style. The collection comprises of a range of gender-neutral ready-to-wear and accessories that are a cross-cultural dialogue between the two continents. Fabrics used for the accessories, for example, have been specifically sourced from Ize's home country of Nigeria, and transformed into contemporary pieces such as a phone bag.
"There's a freshness to Kenneth’s designs that is so very different, and it creates a nice contrast to the brand's DNA," offers Roitfeld. "I'm certain that Karl would have loved the collection and its exploration of color and culture."
The Karl Lagerfeld x Kenneth Ize capsule collection is no doubt a feast for the eyes solely due to its heavy use of prints. A standout is definitely the black-and-white checkerboard that's seen on a lightweight shirt as well as matching trousers. But pieces such as a navy tailored blazer detailed with topstitching and flare trousers in fresh summer hues, balance the more statement offerings.
Thankfully, there are no sweatpants in the mix—Lagerfeld was reportedly against it anyways—because after a year of living in them, it's about time to perhaps retire sweatpants to the back of the closets for now.
The Karl Lagerfeld x Kenneth Ize capsule collection will be available in select Karl Lagerfeld stores, Karl.com, Brownsfashion.com, and FARFETCH.com from 7 July 2021.
