It has been a while since Virgil Abloh took creative reins for Louis Vuitton's menswear division. Three runway shows in, it's his debut spring/summer 2019 runway that's still cemented in our minds. The runway ran through the Palais Royal garden and resembled a rainbow in all its multicoloured glory. The clothes were reflective of that as well, beginning with white and built up to a gradient of colours.
Capturing that joyful spirit of inclusivity, Abloh introduces the Louis Vuitton Rainbow, a series of colourful sunglasses that are crafted in Italy. Taking reference from that rainbow runway, each pair of sunglasses (made out of solid nylon) features a main colour that melds into another colour towards the temple tip. They're quite subtle gradations—red to orange, orange to yellow and blue to violet. The most stark iteration would be the piece that goes from yellow to green. Aside from the dual-coloured pieces, there are also pieces in beige, black and clear crystal that are great options for those who prefer something a tad simpler.
The first Louis Vuitton Rainbow collection consists of two styles. The Louis Vuitton Rainbow Square is a familiar wayfarer silhouette, while the Louis Vuitton Rainbow Pilot is a minimal take on the classic aviator. Both styles are tied together with a distinctly designed hinge, which is derived from Louis Vuitton's signature S-lock. You'd notice the design immediately as a closure used in Louis Vuitton trunks; a sweet nod to the heritage of the maison.
Louis Vuitton Rainbow is now available in Louis Vuitton boutiques at The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands, ION Orchard, and Ngee Ann City.
