Louis Vuitton's partnership deal with the National Basketball Association (NBA) hits its second year this year. And that could only mean that a second LV x NBA collaboration collection is upon us as well. If the first collection was a bold debut of monograms (the NBA logo interpreted as an all-over monogram was quite something) and elevated basketball merch, the latest is set to be one that's slightly more pared back but still just as graphic.
The collection sticks to its original premise of designing with the lifestyle of an NBA player in mind—fashion for travel, game, and press conference. Travel-centric styles come in the form of relaxed casualwear pieces such as a blouson and a decadent pair of trousers quilted in the manner of Louis Vuitton's signature floral emblems. Graphic multicoloured letters appear as prints, with each referencing the fonts used by NBA teams, and are emblazoned across the pieces inspired by the game. As for the press conference-related fashion, artistic director Virgil Abloh designed '90s-inspired cuts and leather jackets reminiscent of hero jackets.
For this second iteration of LV x NBA, Abloh also had the assist of Don Crawley (or better known as Don C). The streetwear-centric designer and constant Nike collaborator helped design the collection's blouson, shorts, a Keepall, as well as some of its more lifestyle objects.
Which brings us to the LV x NBA series of bags and accessories. Just like the debut collection, the sophomore effort sees the return of those basketball hoop detailing on a range of Louis Vuitton signatures such as the aforementioned Keepall. The collection's team-inspired fonts also appear on a selection of pieces for an added graphic touch, while almost all the accessories are stamped with the NBA logo. An updated rendition of the LV x NBA championship ring is also part of the collection's range of jewellery.
Especially new this time around is the inclusion of ball pouches and basketball carriers. For those who want a more literal manifestation of the collaboration between Louis Vuitton and the NBA, the collection debuts the maison's first-ever basketball. They're available in an actual, life-sized 29.5-inch version as well as a miniature 5.11-inch collector's piece—both created out of a composite material to mimic the classic colour of basketballs and leather traditionally used for the maison's luggage. And the best part is, the life-sized version is adorned through and through with the Louis Vuitton Monogram. Chic.
The second LV x NBA collection will be available from 28 May 2021 in Louis Vuitton boutiques and online.
