It seems as though the award shows this season have been plagued with more drama than ever before. While the 61st Annual Grammy Awards were accused of not being supportive of the hip-hop community, black artists at large, as well as female musicians, the 91st Academy Awards had to tackle the issue of finding a host. After the announcement that comedian Kevin Hart was to host the Oscars this year, homophobic tweets that he made in the past (which has been addressed by Hart before) resurfaced and drew backlash from the public.
The Oscars went on this year without a fixed host. Instead, the show relied heavily on award presenters the likes of Whoopi Goldberg, Chris Evans and Michelle Yeoh. Melissa McCarthy and Atlanta's Brian Tyree Henry presented the award for 'Best Costume Design' in a hilarious spoof of The Favourite.
With such a prestigious event, awards nominees and guests took to the red carpet in all manner of haute couture gowns, tuxedoes, and dramatic silhouettes. Nicholas Hoult turned up in Kim Jones' autumn/winter 2019 draped suit for Dior Men, Jason Momoa made blush pink look (for lack of a better word) masculine, and Billy Porter showed up in a tastefully dramatic Victorian-esque tuxedo gown by Christian Siriano.
