The state of New York's fashion scene might not carry the prestige as its European counterparts across the pond, but there is no denying the influence of American designer Ralph Lauren. Much like how Mark Twain influenced the literary scene of America, Ralph Lauren has a similar impact on the American fashion landscape.
The label stood for more than just fuss-free, great clothing; it represents the American dream. But the label's most lasting influence belongs to its Polo Ralph Lauren label. You might know the brand for their preppy inspired clothing, amazing tailored evening wear, and polo-tees with its iconic logo, but no one else dominated the streetwear scene in the 90s like Polo Ralph Lauren.
A big part of that can be attributed to the Lo-Lifes crew, a 100 member strong collective who embodied the hip-hop lifestyle who wore Polo Ralph Lauren exclusively. They would go on and influence the hip-hop universe with its subversion of sportswear, baggy silhouettes and vibrant logos. It even counts Kanye West as a member; who famously wore a pullover with the Polo Bear on MTV's Total Request Live.
While Polo Ralph Lauren has launched many collections deemed grails over the years, the holiest of them all was the iconic 1992 ‘Stadium Collection’. Inspired by the 1992 summer games, the use of contrasting fabrics, stadium and P-wing logo put it firmly in menswear lore.
An original pullover from 1992 would set you back a pretty chunk of change, that is until the brand decided to give the people what they wanted, and re-launched the collection in 2017. Needless to say, that collection promptly sold out. In a scene that is inundated by a myriad of streetwear labels, the continued demand for Polo Ralph Lauren speaks loudly about its place on the Mount Rushmore of streetwear grails.
This season, the brand will be dropping the Indigo Stadium collection. The six piece capsule is an edit of the original collection, with a refreshing indigo dye twist on the pieces. More than just a different colourway, the use of indigo looks to infuse the ethos of denim, a pillar of Americana into the collection.
Signature Stadium silhouettes like the original Polo Stadium on pullover hoodie and P-Wing graphics on jackets and fleece, are reimagined with indigo fabrications. The collection is rounded out with tear-away track pants with an abrasion detailing that is reminiscent of a lightly worn pair of dark denim jeans, faded bucket hat and graphic-heavy polo cap. Don't call this collection a comeback, but rather, a clever update on a classic.
The Polo Indigo Stadium collection will be launched end of September via the Polo app and select Polo Ralph Lauren flagship stores.
