Freddie Mercury is a bona fide legend. It's been almost 17 years since his untimely death, yet the world still mourns, celebrates his many talents and remembers him through music and film. While Queen—the band he famously fronted and formed—continues to tour the world with a different frontman, Freddie Mercury is without a doubt, irreplaceable.
Mercury is such an individual that even making a biopic of him proved to be quite a task. The film was first announced in 2010 and, since then, was subjected to multiple casting—Sacha Baron Cohen and Ben Whishaw were supposed to take on the leading role—and script changes, as well as directorial issues. In the end, Bohemian Rhapsody will see the light of day in Singapore's cinemas on 1 November 2018. Judging by the trailer alone, there's much to be excited about.
From what we can tell, Freddie Mercury is reincarnated with the help of Primetime Emmy award-winning actor Rami Malek of Mr Robot fame. The music in the film has been rerecorded with vocals by Christian rock musician Marc Martel, who sounds eerily like Freddie Mercury. The biopic details Mercury's life from when he formed Queen until their performance at 1985's Live Aid benefit concert. This means that we'll be seeing Mercury's sense of style evolve from the long hippy-esque hair we see in the 'Bohemian Rhapsody' music video to the iconic (and constantly referenced as a meme) slicked back hairdo and moustache combination.
We don't even have to squint hard to notice the similarities present in Saint Laurent's autumn/winter 2018 collection. There's the unapologetically heavy use of fur—there's even one that's crafted into a mullet—and the skin skimming silhouettes. Anthony Vaccarello might not have directly referenced Freddie Mercury, but the vibe and aesthetics would have made for an awesome touring wardrobe if the legend were still alive. We pick some of our favourite rockstar-ready animal print and fur looks from Saint Laurent that'll imbue some Mercury's enigmatic presence.
