Talk about a collaboration coming out from left-field—Rick Owens, fellow gents and streetwear scholars, is collaborating with Moncler. But instead of being part of the Moncler Genius initiative, which features the project's founding collaborators such as Simone Rocha, Craig Green, and Hiroshi Fujiwara of Fragment—plus the new addition of Jonathan Anderson—Owen's project will be a standalone project.
In an interview with Vogue, Owens said, “I’m not sure I’m really a group person". He further elaborated by adding, “I mean, I’m the first to roll my eyes about the collaboration thing, but the other side of me thinks that any excuse for people to intersect, especially in the fashion world—and especially somebody like me—to go out and kind of intersect with other fashion bubbles, is something I really approve off."
So what can he expect from the capsule collection? For one, the collaboration is one of the biggest partnerships ever undertaken by both brands, quite literally. The ready-to-wear portion of the collaboration sees Owens translate Moncler's signature nylon duvet with his dark and gothic aesthetic, but the crown jewel of the collection is a tour bus. You read that right. The brutalist inspired bus has interiors that mirror the interiors of Owen's home—featuring all grey interiors furnished with army blankets.
Owens further revealed, "Moncler approached me about a collab and I took advantage of the moment to ask them to do something different—to customise a tour bus for hun and I to make a road trip from LAX to Michael Heizer’s ranch in Nevada. Heizer had invited us to see his monumental land art piece city, 48 years in the making."
He goes on to say, "I was kind of thinking about Joseph Beuys travelling to the U.S. from Germany in the seventies, landing at JFK, being wrapped in felt and taken by ambulance to his N.Y. gallery to live with a wild coyote for 3 days in his installation 'I like America and America likes me' and then going straight back to Germany the same way."
The entire collection—bus included—will be available for sale.
