When it comes to the variety of hues on the spectrum, neon is not the easiest colour to pull off. It's a cautionary colour for a reason. But it has not deterred a myriad of creative directors from putting it in their collection. The rise of neon is a confluence of the 80s disco era trend with the fashion world's fascination with workwear.
From the runways of Prada, Versace, Alyx, Craig Green and Acne Studios, to the backs of fashion week attendees, neon is trending in a big way. Need more proof? It is also the colour of the moment of culture driver, Virgil Abloh. The Louis Vuitton creative director has been seen rocking a highlighter green T-shirt while spinning at the recent Astroworld music festival, as well as rocking a pair of unreleased Off-White x Nike Air Force ones in the Volt colourway.
But you didn't arrive at this article to listen to us rant on about the 50 shades of fluorescents. While tricky, there is no wrong way to go about pulling off neon. But, at Esquire Singapore, we recommend that you start by infusing the colour into your wardrobe in small doses. Start with pieces that feature an accent of neon, before moving on to monochromatic accessories (for example, Prada's luminous nylon bags), to full-on statement pieces.
