French fashion house Saint Laurent has grown to be synonymous with an unabashedly rock and roll aesthetic that's always elegant. The typically Saint Laurent men's look comprises of a well-cut tailored blazer, a silk shirt, skinny denim jeans, and anchored by Chelsea boots. But of course, in true Saint Laurent form, they're all impeccably constructed and luxuriously designed.
Yet at the same time, there are the more grounded offerings that are crafted for city life. By themselves, these items might look out of place in the Saint Laurent visual language, but they make sense when paired together with a Le Smoking-inspired blazer.
The City Sailor backpack (SGD1,360) is crafted from dense cotton canvas and is lightweight. Unlike regular sailor-inspired backpacks, the drawstring closure on the Saint Laurent version is designed with a closed loop (as opposed to just having two ends of a cord) for a sleeker finish. It also helps that the backpack is softly structured and is just about the right size for a jaunt around the city.
Deliberately distressed and worn out, the SL24 sneakers (SGD1,130) are about as dirty as one could get at Saint Laurent. The outsoles look as though they've been through dirt and heavily used on the daily, while the upper leathers look scuffed up and used. The beauty of a sneaker such as this though, is that there's little care needed. There's no need to be precious about a pair of distressed sneakers, no matter its luxurious origins. There's always that hesitation about leaving the house in a pair of brand new, pristine white kicks; none with the SL24 sneakers.
Pair the City Sailor backpack and the SL24 sneakers together, and you're equipped to handle life in the big city. And with an irreverent sense of style too.
