One collaboration good, three collaborations great. It is no secret that we at Esquire Singapore love a good collaboration. UNIQLO takes the spirit of collaboration and turns it up a couple of notches. To be specific, the Japanese retail giant has dialled it up by three notches, with the launch of their Master of Graphics project for their UT line inspired by the wonderful universe of Star Wars.
Spearheaded by NIGO, creative director of the UT line, he's invited fellow notable streetwear designers—Jun Takahashi of Undercover and Tetsu Nishiyama of WTAPS—to put their own spin on their favourite Star Wars characters and stories. For Jun Takahashi, his prints meld the nostalgia of his first experience with science fiction with the drawing style of his favourite cartoon series. For Tetsu Nishiyama, it's a chance to put some shine on his favourite—yet obscure—character from the series: the Dewback, a rugged and rideable reptile.
Last but not least, NIGO went with a character that had a meatier role in the Star Wars canon: Greedo the bounty hunter. On the collaboration, NIGO says, “I adored Star Wars films so much that I grew up around them. They were all great, but episodes IV, V and VI stood out most. I loved the scene in which Greedo appeared, although this was where Han Solo blasted him. The exchange between the characters and the rhythm of Greedo’s speech were superb. I want people to enjoy quotes from Greedo and Yoda on the UTs.”
More than just T-shirts with graphics, these three Japanese designers have turned them into an opportunity to pen a love letter to one of the most iconic movie franchises.
The Master of Graphics Star Wars collection is available at all UNIQLO stores as well as online.
