Still salty about missing out on the Hamilton Intra-Matic 68? This was the 2017 release made in a limited edition run of 1,968 pieces. By all accounts, it was a gorgeous re-edition of an historical Hamilton chronograph known simply as Chronograph B.
The 2017 Intra-Matic 68 had a reverse panda dial and a classic stainless steel case measuring 42mm, which although much larger than the 36mm original, was an inconsistency collectors were quite happy to overlook—as long as they scored one.
For the rest of us, it was a reminder that maybe we could hold out for something better? Because if Hamilton remade the Chronograph B, surely they would also remake the Chronograph A? Lo and behold, this year, our prayers have been answered.
The 2018 Intra-Matic Automatic Chronograph is scheduled to arrive in stores around November but the good news is, it is not a limited edition piece. Hallelujah! And that’s not all. If you consider 42mm cases too big in general, you’ll be happy to know that this stylish classic chronograph comes in nice and tight at 40mm, which is the perfect size for most everyone, ladies included.
Would it be better if it had a 36mm case so its 100 per cent loyal to the dimensions of the original? Maybe. But realistically the Calibre H-31 automatic chronograph movement is going to need a bit more space if it’s going to serve up an extended 60-hour power reserve plus a date function. Now don’t get your knickers in a twist on the whole date-versus-no-date argument. That’s how modern reissues are done—with date. If you’re so hung up about the feature, go get a real vintage 968 Hamilton Chronograph A from 1968.
Like a photo negative version of the 2017 model, the 2018 Intra-Matic Automatic Chronograph comes with a panda dial, black inner flange, black lacquered chronograph seconds hand, and a white date disc. Hamilton has also paired it with a soft touch leather strap that’s extra comfortable on the wrist.
Priced at $3,170, the Intra-Matic Automatic Chronograph will arrive in November at all Hamilton authorised retailers.
