Over the last week we hosted our annual flagship event, Esquire Neighbourhood, though like everything in 2020, it looked a little different this year. Conceived as an interactive microsite with a series of talks, performances, workshops, games and intimate offline experiences, this bonanza of a festival brought together some of the great creative and minds of our times, with a line-up of some 25 speakers from 9 global cities. But while the live component has wrapped, it doesn't mean that it's over.
In fact, we've made all of the interviews and group talks available to view—in full—so that you're able to revisit them. What's more is that many of the experiences and games (including our Zegna Styling Suite, the Volkswagen test drives and our Esquire Arcade, where you can win prizes from Braun Buffel, Coach, Leica and Martell) are still open for a limited time. Herewith, and until 2021, we present the highlights from this year's Esquire Neighbourhood.
Ideas abounded in our group panel discussions
When you bring together great minds, big ideas are born. That was certainly the case at Oceans in Crisis, a conversation between endurance athletes and adventurers George Bullard and Ben Lecomte, UNDP Ocean Advocate Cody Simpson, and Parley for the Oceans founder Cyrill Gutsch. Over the course of an hour, the four thought-leaders spoke about the pressing issue of our oceans' declining health and the innovative solutions at hand to halt and reverse this course.
Likewise, at our Menswear Now talk, with brilliant designers Emily Adams Bode (New York), Daniel w. Fletcher (London) and Feng Chen Wang (Shanghai) we learnt about new ways of conducting business in a post-Covid world that could help ease pressure on both planet and people.
New season style is fun and interactive
With Italian luxury menswear label Ermenegildo Zegna, we put together the Zegna Styling Suite, an interactive slot-machine that showed all the ways to combine its key garments of the season, as well as highlight the Esquire style team's top recommendations. The best part? By taking a spin you can unlock a complimentary styling experience with Zegna, and 20 lucky winners will receive a surprise from Zegna during their experience.
We really got to know our favourite stars
Did you know that actor Lewis Tan is a massive Blink? (That is: a Blackpink fan). Or that comedian Ronny Chieng always wears a suit and tie to his interviews? Or that performer Harry Shum Jr. actually grew up speaking Spanish, having been born in Costa Rica? In our intimate discussions with creative talent from around the world, including Lauv all the way from LA, we were able to appreciate a different, more personal side and better understand their journeys to finding success.
Whilst we realised just how unfit Covid has let us become
Local gym Level Singapore delivered us a 30-minute virtual HIIT (high intensity interval training) workout and, boy, was that a shock to our foggy systems on Saturday morning. The best part, though, is that the more you do it, the less rigorous it seems, allowing you to up the intensity to your own level, and without any equipment necessary, you can do this simply in your living room. Try it out!
There's a lot to know about wine—but it needn't be difficult
Should you bring a Shiraz to a dinner party? Or a Cabernet to a barbeque? There are dozens of different types of wines, each with its own scent and flavour profile—how can one tell them apart? Sam Stephens, the brand ambassador for Australian winery Penfolds, helps you to answer those difficult questions in our engaging virtual wine masterclasses. You can even win a bottle here.
Just because you can't leave Singapore doesn't mean you can't escape
And with free test drives of Volkswagen's new Golf R-Line, it’s time to experience a new dynamic dimension. Equipped with a sportier R-Line body kit to match its distinctive headlights and LED tail light cluster, the Volkswagen Golf R-Line takes to the road with style and presence. Book your test drive now and we’ll bring the R-Line to your doorstep!
Charlie Lim is a rightful star
The homegrown singer-songwriter and music producer performed an exclusive acoustic set of three tracks on the opening night of Esquire Neighbourhood, and in these stripped-back versions of some of his best-known songs, he confirmed why his ascent has been so steep. These we could listen to again and again.
Photography was a major part of the event
Our friends at Leica hosted an inspiring workshop with local photographer Lee Yik Keat, showing you how to take photos that'll impress even the professionals. Later, Yik Keat joined his photographic peers Tom Blachford and Margaret in a panel discussion about the topic of photography in the age of Instagram, offering insightful advice for those aspiring to get into the industry.
There's plenty to win!
At our Arcade, you can complete the memory game and stand to win one of the prizes you see behind each card, including items from Braun Buffel, Coach, Leica and Martell. We promise it’s that easy!
