We came to know of the music of Frank Lopes Jr (aka Hobo Johnson; named while living in his car) in his debut on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series last year. It was wholly original, with a mix of hip-hop, spoken word and earnestness. While his music tends to lean typically lo-fi, 'Typical Story', his first single since his last album, The Rise of Hobo Johnson, is anything but.
Since signing with Warner Brothers, it's clear that there's an injection of money that made Hobo Johnson's 'Typical Story' look the way it looks. The rock vibe goes well with the visual of a pool party going off the rails. Lopes Jr describes it as "an evolution" and hopes people will like it. Well, we dig it. It's catchy and looks to be this summer's new power pool anthem.
With 'Typical Story', it proves that Lopes Jr isn't a one-hit wonder with 'Peach Scone'. We'll see what other surprises he has when his album, The Fall of Hobo Johnson, is released this year.
