The office seems like the last place to kill you. But studies have shown that the white-collar workers, the desk jockeys, the pencil pushers… if you’re seated for longer than 30 minutes, you’re at risk of having your mortality rate increased to about 55 percent. We are not meant to stay idle.
The reason for this? Something called Non-exercise Activity Thermogenesis, or the very unassuming acronym, NEAT.
NEAT is the energy expended outside of sports-like exercise. Seemingly banal acts such as walking or doing your laundry and, hell, even that stupid finger gun you do to your colleagues whenever the phrase straight shooter is mentioned, add to your NEAT count. The more NEAT you produce, the better it is for you.
The pandemic isn’t helping things either. Because we work from home, it’s very tempting to just sit in your bed with your laptop on your lap (not ergonomically advisable). We tried to create an office environment under our roof but we’re lacking that one colleague who would ask you to join them outside for a meeting or lim kopi during work hours.
To combat a sedentary work life, a standing desk is usually the answer. The people behind the ergonomic work chair, ErgoTune, have ventured into the standing desk market with EverDesk+ in a bid to create a perfect home workspace.

You can pimp out your EverDesk+ in a variety of colours and finishes. Choose from a series of natural wood or even a resin river to complement the wood material. Aesthetics aside, the height-adjustable standing desk aims to not only keep you literally on your toes but get you working efficiently. One of the ways is trying to reduce the clutter on your desk. EverDesk+ has an integrated UniGroove system that curtails unruly cable with a cable stopper or functions as an upright phone or a tablet holder for easier access and usability.
What got our attention is the Health Coach function that’s affixed into the desk control. The Health Coach prompts users to get off their butts at preferred intervals of 15, 30 and 60 minutes. When a set interval reaches its end, the Health Coach vibrates, signalling users to adjust the desk’s height, to switch between sitting and standing.
The EverDesk+ retails from SGD599 and is available at everdesk+'s online website.
