The long-awaited trailer of The Suicide Squad dropped last night and we see the return of most of the original team (Harley Quinn; Captain Boomerang; Rick Flagg!) as well as the addition of a few more possibly-dispensable convicts. Slated for a hard R-rating (omigod, King Shark [voiced by Sylvester Stallone] tears someone apart).
Contrary to the popular belief, this second instalment is not called Suicide Squad 2. The sequel to David Ayer's Suicide Squad in 2016 is The Suicide Squad. And it's written and directed by James Gunn, Marvel's special-boy-then-disavowed-over-old-tweets-then-back-in-the-Mouse's-good-graces-wunderkind. You can clearly see Gunn's Troma influences in the trailer (omigod, King Shark [still voiced by Stallone] eats someone whole!) and that magic touch with the camaraderie a la Guardians of the Galaxy.
And with the bevvy of personalities in this movie, don't get too attached to some of them. This is a suicide squad after all. Collaterals are expected. It's time to open up that office pool to see who will bite the bullet first (my money is on Polka-Dot Man [played by David Dastmalchian]).
But I will lose it if King Shark dies (omigod, he pointed to his webbed hand and said "hand").
The Suicide Squad is slated to be released August 6, 2021.
