No doubt Joseph Schooling is determined about swimming. He best his hero, Michael Phelps, at just the age of 22 for the 2016 Rio Olympics finals event. There's something else that he's serious about too—skincare.
Man-made pools that swimmers paddle in contain harmful chemicals such as chlorine and its by-product haloacetic acids to prevent bacteria growth. Although it's impossible to completely eliminate them, we can decrease their damage to our skin.
Working with Atlas Medi-Aesthetics, a long-time confident who treated Schooling's skin issues since young, JS Orphic addresses the essential pillars of skincare—cleanse, hydrate, repair and protect—with four products that alleviate skin concerns, provide long-lasting protection and stimulate healthy skin rejuvenation.
This project is helmed by a team of leading aesthetics doctor and skincare specialists from Korea. We know Koreans' meticulous on physical appearance and skincare routines. Thus, the thoughtfully-formulated JS Orphic is fitting.
We caught up with Schooling to discuss his skincare woes and how JS Orphic is indispensable in his current active lifestyle.
ESQ&A with Joseph Schooling
ESQ: Why did you decide to team up Atlas Medi-Aesthetics to produce a specific range of skincare range?
Joseph Schooling: Skincare has always been a big part of my life. I had skin problems since I was a little kid due to the constant exposure to chlorine and sunlight. I had frequent swim practice and my hair was bleached and I developed sun spots and patches on my body. It would get flaky and uncomfortable, so my mum took me to doctors to address the issues.
In 2017, when I was doing my treatment with Dr Yuen, I saw marked improvements to my skin with the adoption of a new simple skincare routine as well as using some of the products Dr Yuen recommended. I also discovered that I was not alone in my skincare issues and several of my teammates had similar concerns. Because of what I went through, I had more tips to share, and it occurred to me that more folks out there should know about skincare especially those who have an active lifestyle.
ESQ: When did you start paying more attention to your skin and how skincare is essential to your daily routine since then?
Joseph Schooling: I started using moisturizers then and it has been a big part of my daily routine since I was 11 years old. It’s a ritual now and I definitely use moisturizers after practice and after showers.
Generally, I would use the Hydrating Moisturiser in the morning and the Stem Cell+ and Snail Waterfall extract in the evenings. It has a light yet luxurious texture and incredibly moisturizing.
Sometimes, I shower countlessly in a day, especially when I have practices. So, I moisturize multiple times! During peak periods, I would use the snail serum throughout the day. There is always a jar of the snail serum in my bag.
I also use sunscreen religiously. Typically during practices, I will reapply sunscreen hourly.
ESQ: Which product from this collaboration is your favourite and can’t live without?
Joseph Schooling: My favourite and most frequently used product is the Stem Cell+ Snail Waterfall Serum. I use it frequently like a moisturiser as my skin is very dry. The product includes patented ingredient 'Althaea Rosea' in the formulation to support skin regeneration and recovery.
The texture is light yet luxurious and it works miracles for my super dry skin. I don’t like products that have strong smells or rich creams and these were my key feedback to the team when they were developing the products.
ESQ: How do you advocate skincare to your peers who think it’s alright to go without them?
Joseph Schooling: Start young and understand that the skin is the largest organ. Do not worry about others laughing at you. You have to take care of yourself and begin the skincare habit when young.
ESQ: What are your do’s and don’ts in regard to your skincare regime?
Joseph Schooling: I do not have big rules. It’s a ritual for me to moisturise after every practice and shower.
Sunscreen re-application per hour is super important for me. Especially when I travel, I ensure that I apply the moisturiser regularly.
ESQ: Competitive swimming is your profession. So, what measures do you take now (besides cleansing and putting on sunblock) to safeguard your skin?
Joseph Schooling: I go for regular skin laser treatment sessions too.
ESQ: Besides the JS Orphic skincare range, what other products can we find inside your grooming bag?
Joseph Schooling: My shaver, my comb, and a hair styling product (if I remember). I also have a body moisturizer, hand sanitizer and a lip balm.
ESQ: Why do you think it’s important to be well-groomed in modern times and how can JS Orphic help in achieving that?
Joseph Schooling: Being well-groomed gives you confidence. JS Orphic is your skincare solution for a simple daily skincare routine to achieve good skin.
This range of products focuses on the basic but essential steps of a good skincare routine—cleanse, hydrate, repair and protect. Do not take good skin for granted. Start early, prioritise self-care. It can be simple and hassle-free.
ESQ: Will you consider expanding the range to body and hair care in the future as chemicals from chlorine does affect hair conditions too?
Joseph Schooling: Yes, There's definitely a possibility. The word 'Orphic' has a Greek origin and associates with being fascinating and powerful. I hope that JS Orphic will grow to be the go-to solution for personal grooming.
