Lawrence Wong didn't always want to be an actor. But when he did, he delved into it with aplomb. The cameos and bit parts that he took didn't amount to much screen time but, at least, he was doing something that he loved. But even with his nomination for Favourite Male Character at the 2010 Star Awards for his role in The Promise, Wong still wasn't able to see his career translate into better roles at Mediacorp.
Finding himself at an impasse, Wong decided to make his own opportunities. By throwing in his entire lot by moving to China to break into an already-saturated acting industry. His gamble paid off with his break-out role in Story of Yanxi Palace with his portrayal as Cha Hai Lan, the earnest imperial guard. Since Yanxi, Wong's Weibo follower count stands at three million and counting and he's mobbed in public by fans.
Wong's plate is also close to being full with multiple films and TV projects. Can he continue his streak without burning out, especially having signed on as the lead in Mediacorp's My One in a Million? We talk to Lawrence Wong about his career and life thus far in our cover story for the August issue.
