Loewe's animal-shaped leather creations have become signature objets d'art for the brand for several seasons now. What started out as a clever manipulation of leftover leather pieces, is now synonymous with Loewe. The range of small leather goods has taken on the shape of a panda, bear, and even a bunny in fluffy shearling. The elephant, however, seems to be a crowd favourite.
Taking the fondness for animals a step further, Loewe has created a limited edition Elephant Mini Bag that will help in the fight to protect elephants. The bag is a collaboration with social media campaign 'Knot on My Planet'—fronted by supermodel Doutzen Kroes—and is crafted out of tan calf leather. Fixed on the Elephant Mini Bag are handmade beadwork designs by women artisans from the Samburu Workshop in the heart of Samburu, Kenya.
The Samburu Workshop is part of an initiative by Samburu Trust, a non-profit organisation that aims to assist and improve the lives of the Samburu people in Kenya. This specific organisation was chosen as partners for this project as the Samburu people have adopted a close relationship with elephants, and work with 'Save The Elephants'—a Kenya-based organisation—to help protect the elephants. In short, it literally takes a village for a conservation project of this scale to materialise and hopefully, help amplify the cause.
All proceeds from the sale of this limited edition Elephant Mini Bag will go towards the Elephant Crisis Fund, which will then target the most effective projects in elephant conservation. Mainly, these selected projects are designed to stop the killing of elephants, disrupt illegal trafficking and end the demand for ivory.
