Do you regard traditional mooncakes with great disgust? Do you think salted yoke cores are the devil's ass? Or perhaps just have a mild preference for snowskin? You millennial. There's no shame in that, but here's the thing: As much as there are a large array of flavours nowadays, some fall to the folly of being predictable. Gimmicks aside, here are some strange ones to check out.
Marble Lapis Snowskin Mooncakes
For: The parents
Purveyor of Nonya delicacies, Chilli Padi Goodies is putting the Peranakan spin to the dessert with another traditional dessert. In four flavours (Hazelnut, Lychee, Cranberry, Blueberry), each palm-sized mooncake holds a ring of kueh lapis. For those who love a good core, these come with either mascarpone cream or chocolate ganache, speckled with bits of fruit or feuilletine.
The kueh lapis helps to offset the sweetness, and the overall snowskin texture is more cake-like than mochi. The entire process is done by hand, alongside a range of traditional baked skin mooncakes. The two and four piece sets are packaged in limited edition tiered tiffin carriers.
Marble Lapis Snowskin Mooncakes are available to order on Chilli Padi Goodies from 6 September.
For: The vegans, obviously
From Hong Kong's Green Common are two new gift sets—Vegan Custard Mooncake, and Vegan Mixed Nut Mooncake. That's a golden tender casing and custard filling mixed with plant-based milk, agave syrup and flaxseed powder, and Figs with Pistachios & Oats Mooncake or Mixed Nuts with Blueberries & Purple Sweet Potato Mooncake; all 0mg cholesterol and free of added preservatives and artificial colourings.
In line with the brand's sustainable ethos, the boxes are printed with soy ink and the trays are made of sugarcane bagasse to be completely compostable; an extremely rare feat when it comes to mooncake gifting. Plus, the gift box doubles as a mini table to play the 'One Night Carniwolves' board game that comes with the set. Each set comes with six mooncakes.
Plant-based Mooncakes will be ready for collection 6 – 21 September at Green Common, VivoCity. Enjoy a 20% early-bird discount for preorders until 12 September.
