The annual MTV award shows will never conclude without its Europe Music Awards (EMAs). Staged months after the pop-culture defining Video Music Awards (VMAs) and Movie & TV Awards, the continental alternative to its USA VMAs counterpart is held every year in a different country across Europe. This year, the awards presentation will be held in Bilbao, Spain.
Categories of the awards consist of the usual suspects (Best Song, Best Video, Best *insert genre*) and regional-specific honours (from all European cities to non-European and Worldwide). All nominations are considered through the ebb and flow of the music scene and its integral participation in social, cultural and economic circles.
Zooming in on the 'Best Southeast Asian Act' category, Singapore pop band The Sam Willows was announced as one of the seven nominees in the running for the award. This isn't the group's first nomination; 2018 marks their third appearance on the 'Best Southeast Asian Act' list (they were also nominated in 2015 and 2017).
Is '3' a charm for the quartet who released their 11-track sophomore full-length album I Know, But Where earlier in July? The Sam Willows can receive the nominated award with online votes cast by the public. Since its 2007 edition, viewers and music fans are able to vote for their favourite artists in all general categories by visiting MTV's website.
Competing against The Sam Willows for the prize are Afgan (Indonesia), IV of Spades (Philippines), Joe Flizzow (Malaysia), Minh Hằng (Vietnam), Slot Machine (Thailand), and social wildcard winner, Twopee Southside (Thailand). The latter amassed over 28k votes by fans on Twitter who selected them as the seventh ‘social wildcard’ nominee and emerging as the seventh nominee to compete for the Best Southeast Asia Act.
The “2018 MTV EMAs” will air live around the globe from Bilbao Exhibition Centre, Spain. Catch the live broadcast on Sunday, 5 November at 3am (SGT) for the red carpet, 4am (SGT) for the main show, across MTV's global network of channels. Voting is now open until 3 November at 11:59pm CET.
