Last year, some 6500 locals turned out for the annual Esquire Neighbourhood event, in which we took over Duxton Hill with multiple days of talks, performances and workshops. How do you recreate that experience in the midst of a global pandemic where there’s a limit of five people for any social interactions? Well, you don’t. But it doesn’t mean we couldn’t still bring you an incredible lineup of creative talent to entertain, inform and inspire you, and with the 2020 edition of Esquire Neighbourhood, we’ve done just that in what is a primarily virtual series of events comprising more than 20 speakers and performers from 8 global cities.
To kick off this four-day spectacular, we invited homegrown singer-songwriter and producer Charlie Lim to perform an acoustic set exclusively for Esquire Neighbourhood. Live music performance has been one of the industries most-impacted by Covid restrictions, and while a virtual performance can’t replace the spirit of a live one, there is a certain authenticity and honesty to be experienced in Lim’s soulful session. The former Esquire Singapore cover star performs a mix of new and older tracks, including ‘Pedestal’ from his very first EP, released almost ten years ago, and which he explains that he “actually wrote in the shower”. Where all the best ideas come from, of course.
What’s next for Lim? He’s tight-lipped about his plans for 2021, but there’s an exciting release on the horizon for early in the new year, and as an artist who has clinched the number one spot on the iTunes Singapore charts, and headlined concerts at the Esplanade Concert Hall and Star Theatre, we can all agree that the future knows no bounds for this talented musician. For now, enjoy the stripped-back set, and head on over to Esquire Neighbourhood for more events over the weekend.
