After the Italian luxury house of Prada got its hands on adidas’s iconic Superstar sneaker last year, as part of what was described as an ongoing partnership between the two brands, anticipation has been brewing about what would come next. With the reveal of the A+P Luna Rossa 21, that wait is over, with the sportswear brand drawing on its innate expertise to craft a pair of shoes for the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli sailing team as they gear up to compete in the America’s Cup.
Like the wool-based uniforms of the team, unveiled in the last edition of Esquire Health Club, this collaborative partnership represents a dual commitment to innovation and sustainability, with the shoe’s upper composed of a new material titled Primegreen, made from recycled performance materials. A hydrophobic E-TPU (expanded thermoplastic polyurethane) outershell provides flexible and breathable support and prevents water from penetrating the inner, while an EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) tongue and perforated synthetic suede inner saddle enhances the shoe’s sailing performance capabilities. Another feature is its specially crafted laces, designed to narrow at the bottom, enabling speed lacing, and wider at the top, preventing tied knots from coming open easily during competition.
Inspired by and for the revolutionary design of the new AC75 Luna Rossa full foiling monohull that the team will race in their competing for the world’s oldest sports trophy, the sleek and lightweight silhouette of the A+P is matched with flexible barefoot stability, and while the official sailing team will wear the performance shoes, a lifestyle iteration is also available for commercial purchase. Fittingly, the shoes come in a custom-designed water-resistant pouch bag.
