Basque Country never fails to surprise us. Aside from its tomato-and-peppered cuisine, the region also has Semana Grande (Spanish for "Grand Week"), which is a nine-day event, which honours the Virgen de Begoña of Bilbao, Spain and also celebrates Basque culture in a plethora of activities.
Semana Grande will be held at the Alkaff Mansion but instead of the appearance of the giant-sized mascot Marijaia, we get the next best thing: the Concurso de Feos (or "ugly face competition"). Tonight, the contest will take place at the grounds of Alkaff Mansion, where patrons can participate in for a chance to win a SGD200 food voucher or just gawk at the contestants while chowing on a special Semana Grande-menu (Deep-fried Oyster with Garlic Aioli; Chorizo Clam with Tomato, Onion and Parsley; just to name a few) that's prepared by chefs at live stations.
You can still take part in the ugly face competition online. Until 30th August (which is when Semana Grande ends), interested parties can upload pictures of the ugliest face of themselves (of their mothers, zing!) to win an SGD80 food voucher.
Semana Grande will run until 30 August at the Alkaff Mansion.
