But it’s time to let your guard down and introduce your skin to Seeking Silence Facial Hydrator. This newest addition to Aesop’s stable of skincare treatments uses a specially concocted formulation of two ingredients that are entirely new to the brand.
“We now recognise the need to address the uncomfortable sensations associated with skin reactivity, which can manifest with visible signs such as skin redness or flaking, and non-visible characteristics such as itching or burning,” explains Dr Kate Forbes, Aesop’s general manager, product and innovation R&D.
This lightweight soothing hydrator contains Dunaliella Salina Extract (green microalgae rich in antioxidants) and Narcissus Tazetta Bulb Extract (from dormant bulb daffodils), which work synergistically to smooth skin irritation and reduce redness. Bonus components like ginger root extract and Bisabolol complete the blend, bringing a sense of calm and comfort to sensitive skin.
Texture-wise, Seeking Silence Facial Hydrator lives up to its name with its rapidly absorbed lotion and soft, non-greasy finish. You can barely feel its physical presence but rest assured, it does get under your skin, literally. Due to its receptive nature, Seeking Silence Facial Hydrator is suitable for daily use—administer twice a day, morning and evening. Application is simple: after cleansing and toning, gently massage a generous amount on your face and neck.
We had a quick chat with Dr Forbes to find out more about the efficacy of Seeking Silence and the origins of its explorative name.
ESQ: What does the name Seeking Silence mean?
Dr Kate Forbes: Choosing a name is a big challenge for us [as we want] to make sure we get across what we are representing. We think about signs of sensitive skin, particularly what you feel on the inside that is not visible.
That idea that at that moment when you want this product, it helps keep you calm and gives you silence.
So for us, it was a little bit of a play on words, but that idea of your skin seeking sovereignty and calmness. So that’s where the name came about.
ESQ: Tell us the common misconceptions about men and grooming.
Dr Kate Forbes: There’s often an assumption that male skin is thicker than female skin and therefore it doesn’t have sensitivities. But what we also know about male skin is that it often produces more sebum. They tend to be oilier and if you’re not maintaining that in terms of your cleansing routines, that can trigger irritation as well. So they can still develop the signs of sensitivity. Often, the misconception is that men don’t have sensitive skin. And I think we find that there are a lot of men who do exhibit these properties.
ESQ: So how does Seeking Silence suit our skin, especially for us in Southeast Asia, which tends to get hot and humid?
Dr Kate Forbes: This was partly one of the reasons why we wanted to develop something that was a bit lighter in its texture.
If you’re in a colder climate and you need deeper hydration, you might want to pair this with one of our oil-based products like Damascan Rose or Fabulous Face Oil to give additional nourishment. But if you’re in a hot, humid climate, you don’t need that. You want something that feels like it’s giving that veil of protection but with a lightweight texture.
ESQ: Aesop products are gender-neutral but skin characteristics between male and female can be different. So what makes your products suitable for both genders?
Dr Kate Forbes: We’ve got such a modular approach to skincare that we take gender out [of the equation]. It’s really about the skin needs of an individual. We focus on how we can best treat those skin needs as opposed to prescribing them by gender. So we make sure that we look at the skin, its environment and lifestyle, then we start to formulate and recommend products around that.
ESQ: How did you decide on the two hero ingredients that are featured in Seeking Silence?
Dr Kate Forbes: It’s a decision we have to make during the development stages on what ingredients are we going to work with. Why would we choose this one over another? We were really interested in this idea with the daffodil bulbs of slowing things down. So that really appealed to us.
Often when we talk about skincare, it’s always about speeding it up. How do you make the process go faster so that you can speed up cell renewal and replenish the skin? Now, we’ll think about it from the other spectrum. How can we slow it down and give it time to protect and repair? That one certainly appealed to us and we found some great results with those ingredients when using them during testing.
Seeking Silence Facial Hydrator is now available at Aesop signature stores, select stockists and department stores in Singapore.
