Released nearly two years after the previous iteration, the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 3 earbuds are not only 16 per cent smaller, but now also allow wireless charging and independent use, which enables the use of one earbud while the other remains in the case.
Other significant modifications include Adaptive Active Noise Cancellation, which utilises four microphones to continually monitor ambient noise level, and aptX Adaptive codec support for high resolution wireless audio.
The case is cloaked in high-quality fabric and is a little bulkier than what I'm used to, but the weightiness lends a solid feel. Each earbud sports a Sennheiser logo on the outside-facing end and, while lightweight, is not plasticky.
Usage requires the installation of the Sennheiser Smart Control app on the phone and the firmware took about 30 minutes to update, during which the earbuds cannot be used. However, subsequent connections were seamless.
There are four pairs of buds of different sizes and silicone fins for extra grip. The fit is snug but did not make my ears burn even after an hour of continuous wear.
The default EQ settings deliver vocal clarity and clean mids but do not satisfy my preference for deep, punchy bass, so I looked up SoundCheck on the app for some customisation. Unlike most EQ applications, there is no need to adjust confusing sliders to boost or cut frequencies—the app has an intuitive interface and I am able to use my favourite songs to personalise my sound.
I activated Bass Boost and tested the feature using different music genres like rock, funk, hip hop and EDM. As a result, what I get now is high fidelity sound, and even with the boosted lows, there is no distortion at high volume. The trebles and mids shine through.
There are touch sensors for wireless control, which I appreciate as mechanical buttons always have me pushing the earbuds uncomfortably deep into my ears. But the one thing I particularly love is the Transparency mode, which allows me to simultaneously tune into a conversation or my surroundings while music is playing.
The Adaptive Noise Cancellation not only excellently cancels out external noise, but also includes an Anti-wind mode that flushes away the sound of any sort of breeze. Then there's a Sound Zones mode that automatically applies customised sound settings when you enter and leave pre-set zones i.e. the gym or home.
With a seven-hour battery life, I can go about three days each time before having to put to charge.
The Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 3 retails at SGD399 and is available at the Sennheiser web shop and all authorised Sennheiser retailers.
