When word got out that Apple chose Marina Bay Sands as its third flagship store in Singapore, curiosity ensures. Think: 'How would it look like?', and 'What unique features could it have?'. Until recently, what's obvious is only the covered scaffolding surrounding the former Avalon site.
Two days before its public opening on September 10, Apple officially unveiled the spherical exterior of Apple Marina Bay Sands. And we had a first look inside the glass dome.
The Foster + Partners-designed Apple Marina Bay Sands marks Apple's first store to 'float' on water. Unmissable at the iconic location, it boats 360-degree panoramic views of the Marina Bay zone and its spectacular skyline. There's nothing quite like it, of course. The sphere is a first-of-its-kind, all-glass dome structure that is fully self-supported—comprising of 114 pieces of glass with only 10 narrow vertical mullions for structural connection.
From inside, you'll discover an oculus located at the apex of the dome. Inspired by the Pantheon in Rome, it provides a beaming light that shines through the spacious area consisting of The Forum and video wall, which serves as the stage for Singapore’s artists, musicians, and creatives for Today at Apple sessions. Also, the interior of the dome glass is lined with custom baffles that counter blinding light from the sun and provide a nighttime lighting effect.
To enter the dome, head below sea level from Marina Bay Sands' basement. You'll first be greeted with various Apple product peripherals and compatible third-party products. Proceed to resurface through the escalator leading to curated Apple products, accessories, and receive personal technical support from about 140 Geniuses who collectively speak over 23 languages.
Another first for Apple is the underwater boardroom. Located on the lower level of the store, entrepreneurs and developers can receive training, advice or business solutions with Apple team members.
Apple Marina Bay Sands is located at B2-06, 2 Bayfront Ave, Singapore 018972. The store will open to the public on September 10 at 10am. Visits to Apple Marina Bay Sands on Thursday will be by appointment only via apple.com/sg/marinabaysands.
