Let's face it: tailoring is probably the last thing you're shopping for right now. We've been living (quite comfortably) in different permutations of sweatpants and T-shirts for the past year, and tailoring doesn't fit into that equation.
But that's not completely true; at least not when it comes to Suitsupply's spring/summer 2021 collection.
The idea that tailoring is unnecessarily stuffy and restrictive is one that hasn't hold true for the past few years. While its function and details remain, tailoring has adapted with the times and features a more considered approach when it comes to fitting in with our ever-changing lifestyles. We're no longer cooped up in Mad Men-era conventions, after all.
Suitsupply recognises this and has been making strides in ensuring that its tailored offerings are versatile, investment pieces. The spring/summer 2021 collection, in effect, has been thoughtfully designed for our more homebound lifestyle. The collection's Ames trouser for example, takes into account the more casual approach to dressing that we've adopted over the years, and especially now. It's fitted with an elastic along the waistband with a drawstring element for a sportier look while still retaining a sartorial style that wouldn't look out of place when worn with a jacket. And if you're working from home, that also means that it's comfortable enough to casually lounge in whenever Zoom meetings end.
For more bang for your buck, there's the mid-brown Havana jacket. Treat this one like an investment piece you'd get so much style mileage out of. Cut from a cotton-linen-silk blend (pretty much a winning Singapore-friendly combination) by the renowned Ferla mill, the jacket is softly tailored so that it doesn't feel like you're wearing a restrictive piece. Plus, it's unlined construction has more of a lightweight feel that's less outerwear-like.
Suitsupply is by no means a traditionalist brand. The fabrics used are the kinds one could easily fine in well-stocked traditional tailors but at a more reasonable ready-to-wear price range. The spring/summer 2021 collection starts from SGD559—not too bad for something that'll get you looking presentable for years to come. Kick off those sweats because it's time we start dressing up again, working from home or not.
