There are so many things we love about Singapore and being Singaporean that it’s practically impossible to choose one – or five. Being home-bound this National Day, also makes it the perfect opportunity to take stock of our lives, and what it means to be Singaporean. Celebrating along with us this year is Swatch with a new Singapore National Day edition timepiece. So even though it’s going to be a socially-distant NDP, you’ll have an artful memento to take you through the rest of 2021.
Through a unique digital platform called Swatch X You, everyone can customise their own National Day Swatch watch in a matter of minutes. Although given the smorgasbord of fun and vibrant themes, we’d bet our last dollar you’ll be spending way more choosing your design than it actually takes for the watch to be delivered.
Especially for Singapore’s 56th birthday, Swatch collaborates with up-and-coming local artist Kai Lee, who’s created a fresh and joyful graphic canvas everyone can related to. Yes, whether you’re a Boomer or a Millennial, everyone gets our nation’s obsession with old school Red Dragon playgrounds and quaint colourful shophouses.
Obviously Lee wouldn’t leave out the iconic skyline of Singapore featuring a comically spiky Esplanade, the Gardens by the Bay, Singapore Flyer, Marina Bay Sands… And she’s traded CBD buildings for HDB flats this time – a discreet nod to how we’re all spending more time at home these days, no doubt.
Lee’s work frequently showcases little slices of Singaporean life, and that certainly isn’t complete without food. Specifically, street hawker food which is the lifeblood of our Little Red Dot. Taking the well-trodden route with chicken rice and chili crab as the two dishes most representative of Singapore, she also included our country’s most famous but perhaps not everyone’s favourite cocktail, the Singapore Sling.
Now, how does one go about customising his or her own Swatch X You watch this National Day? Step one: Choose a canvas that speaks to you (we highly recommend Lee’s design ‘Swatch Celebrate’ because this design is available for a limited time only). Then move the watch to any point of the canvas you like. You can even rotate it to capture the exact view you have in mind.
Other watch elements can also be customised. You can choose what colour movement you want – gilt, black, or silver – what kind of mechanism you want, with or without hour indexes. Finally, write a 10-character personal message on the back of the dial, then just add to cart, and check out. The damage? A wallet-friendly $186.
Kai Lee’s "I Love Singapore" Swatch X You canvas will be available on Swatch.com from August 5 to 23, 2021.
