The winners of the 2020 Drone Photo Awards have been announced as part of the prestigious Siena Awards Festival, highlighting the artistic excellence of aerial photography (captured strictly by drone, not hand-held camera) from all around the world. This year, Australian photographer Jim Picot has taken home the grand prize for his photographer, Love Heart of Nature, which showcases a school of salmon circling in the shape of a heart around a shark, photographed off of the coast of New South Wales.
The competition is organised into nine categories – including wildlife, people, sport, weddings and, fittingly, life under Covid-19 – and demonstrates the growing appreciation of drone photography (along with other new mediums, like iPhone) within the artistic community, having previously been considered solely for scientific documentation or the domain of tech junkies. Yet the powerful imagery showcased in the awards proves that, from above, photographers are able to capture new and unique perspectives of our world, and with the technological advances of drone cameras, are able to do so with all the creative intricacies of a studio setting. Take a look at some of the standout images from the 2020 Drone Photo Awards below.
