From the tennis courts to punk fashion to the underground music scene, Fred Perry's signature polo shirt has always been a constant presence during these cultural milestones. Fred Perry and youth subcultures go together like a house on fire and for 2021, the brand roped in the biggest virtual band in the world- what no, not Dethklok (although they would be hella cool). The laurel label got Gorillaz to represent their shirts.
Created by Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett, Gorillaz consists of 2D (lead singer); Murdoc Niccals (bassist); Noodle (guitarist) and Russel Hobbs (drummer). With the release of their eponymous album in 2001, the band has been truckin' for two decades, playing by their own rules, creating earworms and picking up several awards on the way. Not bad for a quartet who aren't real enough to vote.
For the campaign, the members of Gorillaz wear their favourite Original M12 Twin Tipped Fred Perry Shirt and Original M3 One-Colour Fred Perry Shirt and while it's a real treat to see what the Gorillaz peeps are into, the real question is: when is that collaboration between Fred Perry and Gorillaz gonna drop?
We don't know when but it'll be soon. For now, we can contend with the interviews and playlist from each band member here.
The M3 and M12 Fred Perry Shirts are available globally, online and in Fred Perry shops.
