Among all face masks available for sale currently, a variant from Under Armour is on almost everyone's wishlist. Often sold out upon every batch's release, it's definitely unlike generic fabric-sewn face masks. The innovative American sportswear brand developed the UA SPORTSMASK with both professional and amateur athletes in mind.
Although it isn't medical-grade certified, UA SPORTSMASK provides a barrier that contains users' breath and cough droplets. Definitely beats not wearing anything at all while exercising. So what makes UA SPORTSMASK a cut above the rest? Here's a break down on the unique technology in creating this activewear mask.
UA SPORTSMASK is made from a reusable, water-resistant three-layer fabric that promotes 'maximum breathability'. This specific blend functions to reduce the spread of respiratory droplets emitted from the wearer.
Firstly, the light outer layer Spacer fabric establishes air pockets for structure, so it stays off the mouth and nose for better airflow. In the middle is an Open-Cell foam. This breathable layer lets air through but makes it hard for moisture and sweat to pass.
Coming in contact with your skin is the UA ISO-CHILL stretch fabric. Although being the inner tier, it is cool against the skin and is treated with PROTX2™, a non-metal anti-microbial technology which inhibits the growth of bacteria on the mask.
Holding the mask securely in place is a moldable nose-bridge that mirrors a medical-grade face mask. In addition, it mitigates airflow to the eyes which prevent the fogging of spectacle lenses. under Armour also has a patent-pending on both the design and construction of UA SPORTSMASK.
First impressions: The UA SPORTSMASK's sculpted form allows some breathing space between the nose and inner fabric. Yeap, you won't be inhaling it and getting choked as a result. This is essential because of the increase in breathing frequency.
Donning the UA SPORTSMASK on for both cardio and static weights workouts, the latter setting felt pleasant enough to complete. The nature of cardio is much more intense, hence the mask's presence still somewhat restrict airflow. It's feasible in short bouts, but to have a UA SPORTSMASK on throughout a 10-minute treadmill session is draining as heart rate will be elevated by eight to ten beats per minute.
We appreciate the thin and stretchy ear loops which allow UA SPORTSMASK to fit snugly. Also, you'll feel moisture trapped inside the mask after having it on for some time. This indicates containment of respiratory droplets from the wearer.
Sizing-wise, it is advisable to do an accurate self-measurement instead of using an approximation. The wire on the UA SPORTSMASK should sit comfortably on your nose bridge and not the wings of your nose. Otherwise, gaps will form.
Although the UA SPORTSMASK isn't of medical-grade, it still can reduce both spreading and getting in contact with stray respiratory particles. The unique UA ISO-Chill technology used for the inner fabric allows heat to disperse, so it feels cool when the UA SPORTSMASK is on.
For mild to moderate exercises, UA SPORTSMASK stays on your face comfortably and facilitates easy breather. Just don't attempt to practice sprints or do a marathon with it.
The UA SPORTSMASK is now available for SGD$35 at all Under Armour Singapore Brand House and online in four size offerings: SM/MD, MD/LG, LG/XL, XL/XXL. *Note: The UA SPORTSMASK has recently restocked on September 1.
