Are we surprised this happened? Are we really? Okay, yes we are. It's human nature to hope for good things in a new year and you know, the vaccines seemed like a good start. Yet here we are, barely halfway through the first month of 2021 and days to Trump impeachment, when, akin to a Black Mirror episode, the US Capitol Building was stormed by a mob.
Gemma Nerrick from Netflix's Death to 2020 said it right. The show that is America is truly one twist after another. Famously starring Jake Angeli aka Jacob Chansley aka QAnon Shaman aka Horned DC protestor, who has since been arrested, charged and allegedly refusing to eat detention food unless it's organic. The silver lining though, is that Trump's twitter account was finally permanently banned "due to the risk of further incitement of violence".
The social media platform has reportedly went on to purge over 70,000 accounts affiliated with the pro-Trump, far-right conspiracy theory QAnon, sparking—needless to say—big reactions from both sides. It's a divisive move to counter inciting misinformation while preserving the freedom of speech. Good thing we have memes, which is a bit of both.
