You gotta admit there’s a glut of boxing boutiques out there. The sort that isn't so much as sparring with other people in a ring but rather partaking in an exercise with boxing elements (unless you wanna go introspective, maybe the "sparring" is actually your internal battle?).
So of all the boxing boutiques out there in the city, here’s one that punches above its weight. The aptly-named boOm Singapore (the stylised ‘o’s resemble jabs) is the brainchild of an ex-Olympic swimmer, Bryan Tay and Victoria Martin-Tay. Along with shower facilities, changing rooms and a 24-person group classroom known as the boOm Box; participants can also opt for an intimate one-on-one, which the instructor will sit with you to construct a personal plan for you.
A new programme called boOm CIRCUIT is a HIIT workout that focuses on functional movements. This is held in the personal training area and has an eight-person cap to the class. boOm has its regular signature session—a 45-minute 10-rounds of punching a water-filled boxing bag and weight-training. With its pulsating lights, thumping beats and sweating bodies, a typical sesh at boOm Singapore, feels like a Saturday night at a Thai discotheque… which isn't a bad thing. But there are two points that floored us: one, was the instructor's enthusiasm. It’s equal parts encouragement and command that can nudge an exhausted spectator into throwing… one. More. Hit. And two, the curated playlist that pipes through the speakers for each session; there’s something about whaling to the rhythm of a techno dance tune on the cusp of a beat about to drop that can motivate one to go far beyond the limits.
